THE BUSTER BLUEPRINT

-

WHAT a great article on the Mike Tyson-buster Douglas epic in the February 2 issue. I remember getting up in the early hours in 1990 to see one of the biggest upsets in history on TV. Douglas’ technique to break Tyson down and then take him out was one of the best heavyweight displays in my 50 years as a fight fan.

When I saw the Gennady Golovkinkell Brook fight last year, it reminded me of the Tyson-douglas bout. Golovkin is a great fighter, and although there was obviously a huge mismatch weight-wise, Brook did show that with the right skills and technical knowhow, and of course a good chin, Golovkin can be hit and perhaps beaten. Brook caught Golovkin with so many uppercuts.

I believe if there’s anyone currently out there who has the ability, like Douglas, to take someone apart who seems invincible, it’s Chris Eubank Jnr. No one is unbeatable, not even Golovkin. Eubank Jnr versus Golovkin – who wins? Ray Fox, Keighley

WISHING PRICE WELL

IT was a shame to see David Price run out of steam against the in-form Christian Hammer. I’m glad big Dave is okay. I don’t know what Price’s plans are for the future, but he’s currently British/european level, in my opinion. There’s no shame in being that level, and you can make some good money boxing at this class. Henry Cooper made a career out of it. Henry was popular in England, and David has a big following on Merseyside. I wish this classy and articulate man well, whatever he chooses to do. Mike Hills, Glenwood Springs, CO

DAVIS’ GREAT INSIGHT

WHAT an interesting piece with Ronnie Davies in the February 2 issue of Boxing News. Davies felt the need to explain himself, defend himself even. He knows that it’s not about the trainer, it’s about the boxer. So he chooses to stay in the background. Team Eubank is a team, where each member brings something to the team. You can be the greatest trainer, but ultimately, the boxer has to go and fight the fight. It was great insight from Davies.

On another note, what an all-action fight Francisco Vargas-miguel Berchelt was. Wow! It was also backed up by an excellent fight on the undercard between Takashi Miura and Miguel Roman. Both bouts were toe-to-toe wars, with no quarter given.

The results set up another potentially cracking fight, this time between Berchelt and Miura. Jamie Ingleby
