CHARLIE “WAGGY” JEFFRIES, R.I.P LONDON EBA (LEBA) member Charlie “Waggy” Jeffries, a Normandy veteran, passed away aged 94 on January 16. LEBA President Stephen Powell reflects: “One of the best nights out Waggy and I shared was when Wag was my guest at the 2009 BBBOFC Awards Dinner in Hammersmith. Good old Wag made my night by just being so happy to be there.”
CHARLIE PAGE, R.I.P ANOTHER LEBA member, Stepney ex-pro and respected trainer Charlie Page, died on January 18. In 1948, Charlie was Class A featherweight ABA Youth champion, and as a pro welter in the ’50s he fought the likes of Albert Carroll, Tony Mancini, Johnny Mann, Ron Richardson and Teddy Best. “As a trainer/cornerman with Dennie Mancini he was the tops,” writes Stephen Powell. “At the [Thomas a’] Becket gym he was revered, and he trained some of the best fighters of the day, including British bantamweight champion Johnny Clark.”
