AMATEUR boxer Ed Bilbey, 17, dies shortly after collapsing in the ring during a tournament fight.
The teenager is given medical treatment in the ring, in South Normanton, Derbyshire, but is pronounced dead in hospital.
“Even though he was younger than everyone else he had one of the biggest hearts in the gym,” Mehdi Asghari, 27, tells The Telegraph, who met him at his local Shinfield’s gym.
“As a boxer he was very talented, with big ambition. He always strived to be the best.”
The course of death is not known, with the results of the post-mortem expected on March 29. England Boxing also launch an investigation.
“We are extremely saddened by this and would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved,” says a spokesperson.
