SLANEY MADE TO WORK

Daniel is forced to maintain his concentration against Gargano

-

WITH a showdown against fellow Doncaster man Richard Thomas looming, Daniel Slaney found Middleton’s still-winless Curtis Gargano in determined mood on this six-bout Joe Elfidh promotion at the North Notts Community Arena. He may well have taken the 39-37 decision of referee-forthe-night Kevin Parker at the conclusion of a watchable four-rounder, but the well-supported southpaw needed to have his wits about him throughout, as the shorter, stockier Gargano held his ground and slung hooks, plentiful in number as well as intent.

In a six-twos, North Anston’s Mark Weston secured the only stoppage of the night when he halted limited Scot Giuseppe Daprato 65 seconds into the third. Mr Parker rightly halted it as Daprato, stung by a pair of left hooks to the body, slid slowly down the corner post. The Newton Stewart man had already been down twice, once to one knee in the dying embers of the second, and once from a left cross earlier in the third.

Dinnington’s Darren Snow and Chessington’s Richard Harrison had met twice before, most recently just a month ago, and had a win each to their credit. This time it was “Snowy” who triumphed, edging ahead in their trilogy by taking a 39-37 decision over four. I thought Harrison, who enjoyed a few busy spells, had done enough to merit a share of the spoils.

Debutants Jordan Mcloughlin (Lincoln) and Kyle Fox (Doncaster) both secured victories over four. Mcloughlin took every round against Hyde’s Dale Arrowsmith, while the popular Fox was given a tougher workout by Telford’s Kieron Gray, before running out a 40-37 winner.

Islington’s Jules Phillips notched his first career win in five by dominating against Westbrook’s Ricky Leach. Mr Parker didn’t need to check his sums before pronouncing Phillips a 40-36 winner in a one-sided affair.

THE VERDICT A night out at the boxing once again proves a popular attraction for Worksop fight fans.
