HIDDEN TREASURE

-

WHILE visiting Budapest recently, I got myself completely lost walking in the suburbs. I turned right instead of left, and found a real delight in a totally nondescript area. I couldn’t believe my luck when I came across it – a statue in honour of the city’s legendary boxer and three-time Olympic gold medallist, Laszlo Papp. Steve Bird

JOSHUA’S LOUIS CHALLENGE

FROM December 1940 until June 1941 – a period of seven months – Joe Louis defended his world heavyweight title seven times. It seems to me that Anthony Joshua will have to try to do something similar if he wants to please everyone. Mandatory defences against Kubrat Pulev (IBF) and Luis Ortiz (WBA), unification contests against Deontay Wilder (WBC) and Joseph Parker (WBO), a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko, and a bigmoney clash with Tyson Fury. These are just some of the bouts that have been mentioned for Joshua. I should imagine, in these modern times, it’ll be almost impossible for all of these fights to occur. Patrick Hodges, Brinkworth

LONG-TIME GRUDGES

HAVING read your articles in the April 6 issue on the Marvin Hagler-sugar Ray Leonard fight, it’s clear to me that Hagler still resents Leonard for the outcome of the bout, as did Henry Cooper with Joe Bugner before them. In both cases, Hagler and Cooper refused to even speak to their former opponents for years. In my opinion, this sort of behaviour is just childish and unprofessional. For the record, I had Bugner slightly ahead on points against Cooper, and Leonard a comfortable winner against Hagler. Simon Collins

TAKE A BOW ‘AJ’ AND WLAD

THE sport of boxing has been amazingly enhanced by Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, who produced one of the greatest fights in history, and showed true sportsmanship before, during and after their contest. Klitschko gave a brilliant boxing display for 10 rounds, and would’ve beaten any other heavyweight in the top 10, aside from Joshua. Barrie Reader, Carshalton

THE MOST ALLURING SPECTACLE

THE heavyweight thriller between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko has put our beloved sport back on a high platform. If promoters and governing bodies set aside ego and greed, and just let the best fight the best, boxing is the most watchable sport there is. Please, just let boxing be what it was always meant to be – the ultimate test of sporting excellence, and the most alluring spectacle sport can produce. Gerard Mccluskey, Peterhead

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

I SUFFER with depression and learning problems, but boxing has given me a purpose in life. I’ve created my own Facebook and Youtube pages, and I’ve interviewed many top boxers. I hope this shows people with problems that they can do something great if they put their mind to it. Sean Mccarthy
