WHITESIDE AND GALE THWARTED

But Scott Forest and Ireland’s Molloy in the medals at the Feliks Stamm

-

THE Feliks Stamm tournament took place at Torwar Hall in Warsaw, Poland from May 3-6.

It proved to be frustrating for GB boxers and European medallists, Lisa Whiteside and Natasha Gale. Whiteside beat Germany’s

Ursula Gottlob unanimously in her opening contest. But then Sweden’s

Katrin Noren outscored Lisa on a split decision.

“Felt sharp, fast and relaxed,” Whiteside stated. “Loved the bout and the coaches really chuffed with my performance but to our disbelief her hand was raised.”

Gale, the European champion, lost to host country boxer, Poland’s

Karolina Lukasik in the quarterfinals by split decision.

Scottish heavyweight Scott Forrest reached the semi-finals but was held to a unanimous defeat by

Erik Tlkanec. Irish welterweight

Kieran Molloy did reach the final, but lost to Mateusz Kostecki, another Polish boxer. French Olympic silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha won gold outpointing Poland’s Adrian Kowal in the lightweight final.

The USA fielded a team. Their flyweight Virginia Fuchs won gold, beating Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu for all five judges. 2016 Olympian Mikaela Mayer reached the semi-final but lost to Finland’s Mira Potkonen, Katie Taylor’s conqueror in Rio. She had however picked up a good win over Azerbaijan’s Yana Alekseevna earlier on in the tournament.
