GGG-SAUNDERS: A 50-50 FIGHT?

-

CONGRATULATIONS to Billy Joe Saunders for one of the best and most absorbing British performances on the world stage for years against David Lemieux. It was a punch-perfect display that was a pleasure to watch… and re-watch.

The comparisons are there with Joe Calzaghe’s fight against Jeff Lacy – not just in the style they both fought in, but also in the bravery of the promotion. It proves that when a top fighter’s promoter puts them in with the best, more often than not they shine. Both Saunders and Calzaghe had lacklustre fights leading into their toughest tests and seemed to be stagnating against inferior opponents, but they each showed their total class when pitched against the best.

Billy Joe seems to be at his peak right now, and the potential Gennady Golovkin bout is now approaching something of a 50-50 fight, in my opinion. Chris Kyle, Brighton

VALUE FOR MONEY

THE British Boxing Board of Control’s response (in the December 21 issue) to the Editor’s Letter of December 7 was interesting. However, at no point did they mention value for money for paying customers, either paying on the door or via television subscription. The proliferation of one-sided contests is putting people off attending live events. Whenever I hear the record of the latest Eastern European ‘opponent’ I groan in dismay. Give me a fight for an Area title any day. Tom O’toole

SPENCE SHOULD FIGHT PACQUIAO

IF he beats Lamont Peterson, I hope Errol Spence fights Manny Pacquiao next. With each of their respective styles, I think Spence-pacquiao would be a really exciting bout to watch. If Spence wants to be a household name in the sport, he needs to beat an icon like “Pac Man”. Even though he is nearing the end of his career, Pacquiao is still a barometer in the welterweight division. Daylate Mayne

FREE BOXING MAGAZINES

I HAVE literally hundreds, perhaps thousands, of old boxing magazines – mainly Boxing News – but I need to downsize. I’d like them to go to a good home, rather than a bin. Would any boxing clubs etc be interested? The only condition is that they’d have to be picked up. To get in touch, please contact: marktayloruk@yahoo.com Mark Taha, Ealing
