FREQUENT FIGHTERS
Other boxers who fought a ridiculous amount of times
l BOXREC record ABE ‘THE NEWSBOY’ HOLLANDERSKY having 49 fights between 1906 and 1922, some way short of the 1,039 he claimed in his autobiography. That figure is doubtless inflated by many exhibitions. Hollandersky had exhibition bouts with Abe Attell and Joe Gans and also a muzzled bear and a kangaroo... Born in Russia, he lived in Manchester for a spell, where he started selling newspapers, before settling in New London, Connecticut. Hollandersky was also a wrestler and claimed to work as a movie extra before his death in 1966, aged 78.
l NO world champion had more fights than JACK BRITTON, the former world welterweight champion from New York known as “The Boxing Marvel.” Britton is best remembered for his 20-fight series with Ted “Kid” Lewis that Britton edged. His career spanned 26 years (19041930) and he was only stopped once.regarded as one of the best featherweights in history, Johnny Dundee, real name Giuseppe Carrora, had 333 fights between 1910 and 1932. He won recognition as the world super-featherweight champion with a disqualification victory over George KO Chaney in 1921 – in his 265th fight.
l STATS for REGGIE STRICKLAND’S career are rather more reliable. He had 363 fights (66276-17-4) between 1987 and 2005, some under aliases. Strickland fought four world champions, Tavoris Cloud, Randall Bailey, Cory Spinks, Raul Marquez and Keith Holmes, and was also beaten five times by Buck Smith.
l BUCK SMITH himself had 227 fights and is remembered by British fans for laying out a disinterested Kirkland Laing at the Royal Albert Hall in January, 1990. Briefly highlyranked due to a long run of victories over (Laing withstanding) nondescript opposition, comprehensive losses to Buddy Mcgirt, Mark Breland and Julio Cesar Chavez ended any hopes he had of challenging for a world title.
