Sean Mccomb is world class, yet has to struggle without full-time funding

-

AFTER being confirmed for the Northern Ireland team, how much are you looking forward to the Commonwealth Games?

It’s nice to hear it officially announced. It’s a great place, being held in Australia, Gold Coast. It’ll be a great experience to go out there. I’m really looking forward to it. It’ll be a brilliant set up I’m sure.

You boxed Luke Mccormack at the Europeans, are you hoping to get the chance to fight him again?

It would be nice if we meet somewhere near the final. It would be a big final. I would enjoy a rematch and I’m sure he would as well.

What’s been your situation with funding?

I’m not sure exactly how it went or why it happened. They just decided to cut back. We’re only given year-to-year contracts.

I’m not sure why. It was a big year with Europeans and Worlds last year… It’s not really fair at all. It’s one of those things. Ireland, they’re way, way behind. You look at GB and how they have their set up, that’s the perfect example of where we want to be and how it should be. You give the people with potential, you give them a couple of quid, you keep them in the programme and you build them up.

So has turning professional crossed your mind?

It has been on my mind a lot... There’s no guarantees either. It’s very hard. You need an Olympic medal or a World medal to get a decent offer to persuade you to go professional.

The Commonwealth Games are [important]. I’m sure all the promoters around the UK will have their eyes peeled watching and be scouting [for people] to sign in the future. There’s going to be a lot of big names.

At the Worlds last year did you feel terribly unlucky to get the Cuban, Andy Cruz Gomez, so early?

Looking around at all the other boxers, I’m more than capable of beating anyone
