KING SOLOMON?

Solomon Dacres has a long way to go, but already he’s scoring big wins

-

Are you boxing soon?

I’m flying out to Kazakhstan. I’m boxing in the WSB [World Series of Boxing] next Saturday. I’m looking forward to it.

I should be able to beat him. I should get to him. I should be able to put some of my combos on him.

The fight will be on Saturday then I fly across Kazakhstan and link up with the rest of the GB squad who are on a camp as well at the same time. I’ll finish the next week after on a training camp. Beating Mihai Nistor was a great performance in the WSB, how was that fight?

I knew he was very tough. I had to keep my shape and keep working. It was a hard fight, just taking his shots as he came forwards trying to hit me with a bomb. I knew I’d have to stay switched on the whole time and just keep working. It was about a high workrate because if I stopped working it just gave him an opportunity.

I just made sure I kept on him the whole five rounds. I was blowing at the end of it but I just had to keep it together so I didn’t get hit with anything stupid.

He’s a big puncher and he puts everything into one or two shots. I was wary of that and stayed on it. He was the last guy to stop Anthony Joshua, was that going through your mind?

Even though I knew it was years ago, in the back of the mind it was still there. You’re thinking if I get caught with a couple of big swings here… I got through it.

It was a good win and the coaches were happy with it. It was a good performance as well. He’s not as old as I thought he was. He’s only 27. He’s been

‘I ALWAYS FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO GET THERE BUT I HAD TO KEEP WORKING’

in the game for a long time.

Do you feel like you’ve improved quickly?

I always felt like I was going to get there but I felt I had to keep working to improve to get there.

It seems quick in the grand scheme of things but it is a long road in the gym and club shows, progressing that way. Going in the ABAS twice before I won it. There were little progressions along the way.

I was buzzing for [winning the Elite championships]. I got two stoppages in the three fights, a stoppage in the final so I was happy.

You boxed Daniel Dubois in 2016, what do you remember of that?

I performed okay but from where I was coming from and where he was coming from, he was on GB for a couple of years, I was still at club level. He was sparring AJ, I wasn’t really sparring. I wasn’t getting much sparring if anything. It was close, obviously he did win. But that’s what put me in the mind of the GB coaches.
