HUGHES DOES DOUBLE

Jack beats old victim Georgiev again, but this time over eight

- Simon Euan-smith

JACK HUGHES was a shade more accurate, and scored the bout’s only knockdown, to run out an eight-round points winner over Bulgaria’s Georgi

Georgiev at York Hall (Josh Goodwin promoted). Referee Lee Every scored it 78-75. It was Hughes’ fourth straight win since losing his debut against Sergey Tasimov (who was bested in a return), and his second over Georgiev, whom he beat over four in March last year.

The bout was fought at a fair pace, with Hughes (Greenford) pressing and Georgiev looking to counter. In the fifth, Hughes opened up to have Georgiev retreating, and finally the visitor went down, apparently from an accumulation of punches. He was up quickly, but the feeling was that maybe Georgiev had run out of gas, and there could be a stoppage.

Georgiev went on his bike, and sustained a cut below the left eye in the sixth and a swelling below the right optic in the seventh. Towards the end of the seventh, Georgiev briefly tried to push Hughes back, and he kept up the pressure in the last. Hughes finished with a small scalp wound.

There was a bizarre – and worrying – ending to the six between Romford’s

Mark Little and Bulgarian Kristian Kirilov. The bell rang to start the fifth, but Kirilov stayed on his stool. Referee Kieran Mccann went over, and the fighter complained he had a headache and couldn’t see out of one eye. Mr Mccann signalled the end, and it was announced as a stoppage after two seconds of the fifth.

Little had his man under pressure throughout, and was well ahead. Kirilov tried to create space and counter, but had a bump under the left eye and bled from the nose. Kirilov finally went down for ‘five’ in the fourth, but the end came as a surprise. Kirilov was given oxygen in his corner and taken to hospital as a precaution, resulting in a lengthy delay in action until the ambulance returned.

Ossie Jervier (Willesden) floored and outscored Croatian Toni Bilic, referee Mccann scoring 60-53. Jervier was the aggressor throughout, and a right to the side of the head dropped Bilic by the ropes in the third. He got up at ‘three’, bleeding from the nose. Jervier stayed on top, though Bilic launched a counterattack at the end of the sixth.

Liam Dillon (Chingford) beat Hereford’s Dean Evans over six, referee Mccann scoring 58-57 (which I thought generous to the loser). It got messy at times, and both were spoken to. Evans seemed the guiltier, and generally I thought the more effective work came from Dillon. Evans sustained slight damage to the nose.

Southpaw Lewis Syrett (Chingford) halted Latvian Aleksejs Palcuns in the second of a scheduled four. In the first, a left hook to the body had Palcuns unsteady. Syrett kept up the pressure in the second, and was warned after wrestling Palcuns down. A left to the body then dropped Palcuns for ‘three’. He was down again, from a right, and up quickly, but Syrett’s follow-up attack convinced Mr Every to stop it after 2-18.

Sean Robinson (Seven Kings) defeated southpaw Jan Balog (Czech Republic), Mr Mccann tallying 40-36. Balog tried, but was generally outworked. The visitor was floored in the fourth by a body shot he claimed was low, and Robinson was warned for stepping on Balog’s foot in the second, and trapping his arm in the last.

Jerome Campbell (Kingsbury) outpointed Slovakian Ivan Godor 40-37 for Mr Every. Godor no doubt shared the last, when Campbell was trapped in the import’s corner and took some stick, but otherwise Campbell was on target while Godor fell short.

Southpaw Dalton Miller (Acton) whitewashed Middleton’s Curtis Gargano, Mr Every marking it 40-36. Gargano clowned and showboated, and finished with a cut left eyebrow and blood from a swelling under the left eye.

Mr Every scored for Italy’s Angelo Bevilacqua over Newark’s Fonz Alexander (40-37) and Adrian Redman (Harlesden) over Bulgarian Konstantin Alexandrov (40-36). Meanwhile, Mr Mccann handed 40-36 verdicts to Northolt’s Dennis Wahome over Stockport’s Jamie Quinn and Hayes’ Jack Newham over Nuneaton’s Kristian Laight.

THE VERDICT Hughes earns a repeat win as he steps up to eight rounds.
