Com­mon­wealth cham­pi­ons in ac­tion at Box Am tour­na­ment

COM­MON­WEALTH GAMES gold medal­list Sandy Ryan re­turned to ac­tion at the Box Am tour­na­ment in Castel­lon de la Plana, Spain from Septem­ber 28-30.

Ryan took a se­ries of good wins in Spain. She opened her ac­count with a third round stoppage win over Italy’s As­sunta Can­fora, an im­pres­sive re­sult over a Eu­ro­pean medal­list. Ryan went one bet­ter in her next bout. She met the reign­ing Eu­ro­pean wel­ter­weight cham­pion, Fin­land’s Elina Gustafs­son, and beat her by split de­ci­sion.

She made sure of gold at the Box Am tour­na­ment, unan­i­mously outscor­ing Czech Martina Sch­moran­zova in the fi­nal. “An­other gold is com­ing home,” she said. “Next tour­na­ment Novem­ber – World cham­pi­onships. Let’s go!”

Two of her team mates also won gold medals in Spain. Youth fly­weight Chloe Wat­son unan­i­mously out­pointed Italy’s

Gior­gia Rossi. While at Elite 57kgs

El­lie Scot­ney won a unan­i­mous de­ci­sion over France’s Amina Zi­dani and took a split de­ci­sion over Amer­ica’s Rianna Rios.

Aus­tralia’s Caitlin Parker had lost to Lau­ren Price in the 75kgs fi­nal of the Com­mon­wealth Games in her home­land ear­lier this year. Parker how­ever got her re­venge in Spain, tak­ing a split de­ci­sion over Price in the quar­ter-fi­nals of the Box Am. Parker how­ever didn’t win gold in Spain. She lost in the fi­nal the USA’S Naomi Gra­ham on a split de­ci­sion. Price re­flected, “I didn’t box nowhere near my best tonight, just couldn’t get into the mo­tion of things, los­ing out 3-2 on a split de­ci­sion. How­ever I think it’s prob­a­bly the best thing that could have hap­pened to me. I’ve been on a high all year win­ning the Com­mon­wealth Games and medalling in ev­ery tour­na­ment so far this year so this set­back is a step up for a come­back.”
