RYAN RETURNS
Commonwealth champions in action at Box Am tournament
COMMONWEALTH GAMES gold medallist Sandy Ryan returned to action at the Box Am tournament in Castellon de la Plana, Spain from September 28-30.
Ryan took a series of good wins in Spain. She opened her account with a third round stoppage win over Italy’s Assunta Canfora, an impressive result over a European medallist. Ryan went one better in her next bout. She met the reigning European welterweight champion, Finland’s Elina Gustafsson, and beat her by split decision.
She made sure of gold at the Box Am tournament, unanimously outscoring Czech Martina Schmoranzova in the final. “Another gold is coming home,” she said. “Next tournament November – World championships. Let’s go!”
Two of her team mates also won gold medals in Spain. Youth flyweight Chloe Watson unanimously outpointed Italy’s
Giorgia Rossi. While at Elite 57kgs
Ellie Scotney won a unanimous decision over France’s Amina Zidani and took a split decision over America’s Rianna Rios.
Australia’s Caitlin Parker had lost to Lauren Price in the 75kgs final of the Commonwealth Games in her homeland earlier this year. Parker however got her revenge in Spain, taking a split decision over Price in the quarter-finals of the Box Am. Parker however didn’t win gold in Spain. She lost in the final the USA’S Naomi Graham on a split decision. Price reflected, “I didn’t box nowhere near my best tonight, just couldn’t get into the motion of things, losing out 3-2 on a split decision. However I think it’s probably the best thing that could have happened to me. I’ve been on a high all year winning the Commonwealth Games and medalling in every tournament so far this year so this setback is a step up for a comeback.”
The American team had a good tournament, with flyweight
Virginia Fuchs, light-welter
Amelia Moore, light-heavy
Krystal Dixon and 81&kgs Danielle Perkins all finishing with gold medals.
