Islington southpaw gets nal eliminator on home soil
JOHN RYDER has been plugging away valiantly on the domestic scene for years and now the Islington southpaw gets his big chance when he faces Russia’s Andrey Sirotkin at the Copper Box Arena in Stratford on Saturday (October 27). Their 12-rounder on this Matchroom show (televised on Sky Sports) is a final eliminator for the WBA super-middleweight title. Ryder, 26-4 (14), lost narrowly to Rocky Fielding last year, but his improved punching power should account for portsider Sirotkin, whose 15-0 (4) ledger has been compiled against lesser opposition.
A cracking 12 for the vacant British superwelterweight belt pits Bermondsey banger Ted Cheeseman, 14-0 (9), against Reading’s Asinia Byfield, 14-1 (6). Smart-boxing Byfield has good skills, but the pick is for the strong Cheeseman to grind him down for a points victory. Elsewhere, having ripped the Commonwealth featherweight crown from Reece Bellotti on a stoppage in June, Manchester’s Ryan Doyle makes his first defence against slick Jordan Gill, 21-0 (5), from Chatteris. Doyle, 17-2-1 (9), has the power to edge a close one.
