10 COUNT
HAIRY SCARY
Eager to stand out, boxers have adopted some wild and unique hairstyles over the years
1. PAULIE MALIGNAGGI
Malignaggi has boxed with pretty much every kind of hairstyle you can imagine, but the braided extensions he used in a 2008 fight against Lovemore Ndou takes some beating. After eight rounds, Buddy Mcgirt, his coach, had had enough and took the scissors to the locks.
2. KOSTYA TSZYU
This Russian-aussie destroyer’s distinctive ponytail would fly left and right whenever he went to work on opponents during a reign as WBA, WBC and IBF superlightweight champion.
3. DAVID TUA
Shaved at the sides with a shock of pineapple hair on top, Tua’s style was nearly as scary as the punch power he used to stop the likes of John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman and Michael Moorer.
4. JORGE PAEZ
Eccentric and inimitable, Paez, an IBF and WBO featherweight champion, frustrated opponents while rocking everything from a mullet to a ponytail to a completely bald head.
5. JORGE LUIS GONZALEZ
Bald on top, Gonzalez’s hair started at the back of his neck and cascaded down towards his shoulders. It was every bit as confusing as the Cuban’s anticlimactic pro career.
6. SALVADOR SANCHEZ
Like a long-lost member of the Jackson Five, Sanchez’s perfectly sculpted afro was big and round and almost as smooth as the boxing style he used to take him to the WBC world featherweight title.
7. JULIAN JACKSON
Not only was Julian Jackson one of the hardest punchers of all time, the junior-middleweight and middleweight world champion also had a better high top than anyone else.
8. RICARDO MAYORGA
Whacky and unruly for much of his career, Nicaraguan Mayorga showed up to a 2004 fight with Felix Trinidad with his hair dyed bright orange. He was stopped in eight rounds.
9. KERMAN LEJARRAGA
A hero in his native Bilbao, hard-hitting Lejarraga doesn’t just stop opponents with his heavy hands, he also has the best rat tail in boxing today.
10. DONNY LALONDE
Lalonde, Canada’s “Golden Boy”, was a former WBC light-heavyweight champion who rocked a blonde mullet and was famously dethroned by one-time welterweight “Sugar” Ray Leonard.
