Cummings is too good for Rose’s replacement, Berki
COALISLAND middleweight Conrad
Cummings earned a unanimous 10-round points success over Hungarian
Ferenc Berki at the Titanic Exhibition Centre (MTK Global). In as a late sub for Blackpool’s Brian Rose, Budapest’s Berki kept a tight guard throughout, his defence only being breached in earnest in the final session, when he was floored by a short left. Scores were 98-91 from Howard Foster, 99-90 from Stephane Nicolo and a much-too-close 95-94 from Zoltan Enyedi. Steve Gray refereed.
Gary Cully from Naas went in against African opposition in the shape of
Mohammed Kambuluta and needed less than a round to see off the Tanzanian. Cully dropped him three times before referee Hugh Russell Jnr deemed enough was enough. It had been set for eight.
Belfast’s Padraig Mccrory lived up to his “Hammer” nickname by disposing of Hungary’s Gabor Detre in just 74 seconds of a slated six. A succession of rights prompted the intervention of referee Paul Mccullagh.
Local Paddy Gallagher looked nice and relaxed in taking all six rounds (60-54) against ultra-game Mexican
Fernando Valencia, who lost his gumshield after being tagged by a big right late in the opener of a bout presided over by Mr Russell.
Belfast’s Sean Mccomb stepped up to six sessions for the first time against plucky Zoltan Szabo and handed the experienced Hungarian a 60-53 defeat. Mccomb scored a knockdown midway through the fourth with a short left
uppercut. Mr Mccullagh officiated. Phil Sutcliffe Jnr won 40-36
against Nicaraguan Eligio Palacios in a contest refereed by Eamonn Magill, while fellow Dubliner Steve Collins Jnr secured a trouble-free 60-54 victory from Mr Mccullagh over Poland’s Pawel Strykowski. Elsewhere, local debutant Stephen Webb overcame Slovakia’s Rudolf Durica 40-35. Durica was docked a point by Mr Russell in the third for a foul.
THE VERDICT Cummings will now be hoping that his intriguing matchup with Rose can be rearranged.
