10 COUNT COMEBACK KINGS

Tyson Fury isn’t the only fighter to miraculously bounce back from a heavy knockdown

-

1. LARRY HOLMES VS EARNIE SHAVERS

In a 1979 defence of his WBC heavyweight title, Holmes was floored by a stunning Shavers right hand in round seven but managed to get up, survive and then stop Shavers in the 11th.

2. DIEGO CORRALES VS JOSE LUIS CASTILLO

It looked all over for Corrales when he was busted up and knocked down twice in round 10 of a 2005 slugfest with Castillo. However, with a little help from a slippery gum shield, he rebounded in incredible fashion to halt Castillo moments later.

3. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ VS MANNY PACQUIAO

A shell-shocked Marquez was dropped three times by Pacquiao in round one of their 2004 fight but somehow able to not only survive the onslaught but grab a foothold and earn himself a draw after 12 rounds.

4. NIGEL BENN VS GERALD MCCLELLAN

Benn was hurt and knocked out of the ring in the very first round of a 1995 war, then decked for a second time in the eighth. He kept fighting, though, and finally got to Mcclellan in round 10.

5. CARL FROCH VS GEORGE GROVES

In 2013, Groves promised Froch he would land two right hands in round one – just two – and duly delivered. That said, the huge right hand which dropped Froch in the first didn’t stop “The Cobra” turning the tables in a controversial ninth round.

6. GENE TUNNEY VS JACK DEMPSEY

Known as ‘The Long Count’, this 1927 heavyweight title fight saw Dempsey pummel Tunney to the canvas in the seventh round but take his time retreating to a neutral corner, which allowed Tunney priceless time to recover. Tunney then boxed his way to a decision.

7. BUSTER DOUGLAS VS MIKE TYSON

Given the drama of its ending, it’s easy to forget this 1990 upset required Douglas getting up off the floor in round eight to then famously finish Tyson in round 10.

8. ANTHONY JOSHUA VS WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO

In an up-and-down 2017 heavyweight war, Joshua dropped Klitschko in round five, was then decked himself in the sixth, before eventually rallying back to halt the Ukrainian in the 11th.

9. RIDDICK BOWE VS EVANDER HOLYFIELD III

In their 1995 fight, Holyfield knocked Bowe down in round six – the first knockdown of Bowe’s career – but “Big Daddy” recovered well and dropped Holyfield twice en route to an eighth-round stoppage.

10. ARCHIE MOORE VS YVON DURELLE

In this 1958 up-and-downer, Moore was floored four times – three times in the opening round – but still managed to drop Durelle the same amount of times and end the fight in the 11th.
