PAUL BROWN
Paul Wheeler talks to Ramsgate’s answer to Jason Statham
When and why you started boxing:
I was 19 years old when I first started boxing. I got involved in the sport in order to turn my life around, as I was fighting on the streets and getting into trouble with the police.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Carl Froch because of his style and his toughness. He would always find a way to win.
Best fight you’ve seen:
The best fight I’ve seen in recent times is Dillian Whyte vs Dereck Chisora.
Personal career highlight:
Proving all the doubters wrong and becoming a pro.
Toughest opponent:
Cheavon Clarke because of his speed, power and agility. He beat me in the Southern Counties final and is now a top amateur for England.
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My strengths are that I’m focused and I push myself beyond my limits. My weakness is that sometimes I doubt myself.
Training tip:
Never give in. Keep focused and keep your eye on the end prize.
Favourite meal/restaurant:
I like eating at Giorgios Restaurant in Margate.
Best friends in boxing:
‘I LIKED CARL FROCH BECAUSE OF HIS TOUGHNESS. HE WOULD ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO WIN’
‘I’M A BIG SOFTIE AT HEART. I CRY AT THE FILM, THE
NOTEBOOK, EVERY TIME I WATCH IT’
My coaches – Mario Michael and Ian Mcdonald.
Other sportsman you would like to be:
A rugby player.
Last film/tv show you saw: The Gavin and Stacey box set.
Who would play you in a film of your life:
Jason Statham, all day long!
Have you ever been starstruck:
Yes, when I met Tyson Fury at the Sussex stage of the Southern Counties championships.
Last time you cried:
I teared up recently when my boy started nursery.
Best advice received:
You only get one shot, so make sure you take it.
Worst rumour about yourself:
I don’t know actually. There’s been a few!
Something not many people know about you:
I’m a big softie at heart. I cry at the film, The Notebook, every time I watch it.
