‘I WAS ALWAYS A VERY EXCITABLE CHILD – A BIT CRACKERS! I STARTED BOXING TO USE UP SOME ENERGY’ Nathan Kirk
David Wainwright talks to a wine snob
When and why you started boxing:
I was always a very excitable child with lots of energy – a bit crackers! I was never in trouble, just very loud and energetic. I started boxing to use up some energy.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Ricky Hatton.
Best fight you’ve seen:
Any of the three Arturo Gattimicky Ward fights.
Personal career highlight:
Even though I didn’t win my Midlands Area lightweight title fight against Charlie Williams [l ko 8 – October 2017], just receiving the letter from the British Boxing Board of Control ordering the fight was great.
Toughest opponent:
Charlie Williams or Ivaylo Boyanov [w rsf 7 – February 2017].
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My strength is my best attribute. My aggression is also a good attribute, although it can sometimes be a weakness.
Training tip:
Dig deep and always train hard.
Favourite meal/restaurant:
A Domino’s Pizza with a garlic and herb dip. I usually get half Texas BBQ and half Mighty Meaty.
Best friends in boxing:
My manager Scott Calow and fellow Nottingham boxer Leigh Wood.
Other sportsman you would like to be:
‘I WAS NEVER IN TROUBLE, JUST VERY LOUD AND ENERGETIC’
‘MEETING HATTON IN A TRAINING ENVIRONMENT STRUCK A CHORD’
The golfer, Rory Mcilroy.
Last film/tv show you saw:
[Reality TV show] I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Who would play you in a film of your life:
Tom Holland – the current Spiderman.
Have you ever been starstruck:
I don’t really get starstruck, but meeting Ricky Hatton in a training environment really struck a chord with me, as he’s the reason I got into boxing in the first place.
Last time you cried:
It was about eight months ago when I was watching a BBC documentary and an old lady died during the programme.
Best advice received:
‘If it was easy everyone would do it.’ Scott [Calow] said that to me when I first came into professional boxing from kickboxing.
Worst rumour about yourself:
That I’ve not really trained or dieted very hard for a fight before.
Something not many people know about you:
I enjoy fine wine and cheese. I’m a bit of a wine snob!
