THE finals of the Irish under 22 championships took place at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday ( January 25).

Middleweight Gabriel Dossen

won the middleweight crown, defending his title when he beat Crumlin’s John Joe Nevin on a unanimous decision in their final. This was Dossen’s sixth Irish title and he continues to be one to watch.

His coach at Olympic BC, Mike Mongan said, “I thought it was a very good bout. Gabriel boxed very well against a good opponent and it was a good performance all around. A great start to the year.”

Dossen remains one to watch. He will enter the national Elite championships for the first time later this year.

Lightweight Amy Broadhurst

also took her second consecutive under 22 title, as she unanimously outpointed Bella Hughes in their final. “I’m absolutely delighted with how I boxed, first round wasn’t relaxed enough but when I relaxed it all started to flow,” Broadhurst said. “Delighted with it all.”

She added, “Won my fight tonight to win my 16th Irish title. Very proud of this achievement. Now it’s all gearing towards my 17th Irish title in two weeks and European championships in six weeks where I’ll look to grab my sixth European medal.”

Colm Murphy gained revenge over John Paul Hale when the two met in the bantamweight final. Only the previous week Hale defeated Murphy in the Ulster championships. The rematch in this competition went Colm’s way on a split decision.

Paddy Donovan, a World Junior finalist and European under 22 finalist, was also victorious as he beat Aaron Daly on a unanimous decision.

There were stoppage victories for middleweight Aoife O’rourke and super-heavyweight Gytis Lisinskas, who halted respectively Renee Roche in the second round and Luke Hall in the first round.

The men’s semi-finals had taken place on January 12 and their quarter-finals and the women’s semi-finals were held on January 11. RESULTS
