TOO FRESH, TOO BIG
Gareth Jones sees Gething get the better of Janes in Welsh title clash
KIERAN GETHING demonstrated that youth and size can be decisive as he clearly outscored veteran Henry Janes at The Neon nightclub to claim the vacant Welsh super-lightweight title. Both had come close to national honours in thrillers. Cardiffian Janes was edged out by Gavin Gwynne at lightweight in 2017, while Gething, from Pontypool, ran Tony Dixon close at welter last year. Their meeting, in the division between, thrilled the punters. But Kieran’s longer reach meant he could keep his left in Henry’s face, while an 11-year advantage on the calendar gave him an engine his 35-year-old foe could not match. After some nip-and-tuck early sessions, Gething ended the fourth with a grin, while Janes turned towards his stool with the expression of a man already feeling the pace. From then on, for all Henry’s heart, the traffic was mostly one-way as Kieran, despite being bruised around both eyes, took a 99-92 verdict from referee Reece Carter.
Garnant’s Chris Jenkins, whose bouts last year were both ended prematurely by cut eyes, will be relieved to have escaped injury as he took a 60-54 decision (Mr Carter scoring for triallist Chris Jones) over willing Lithuanian Edvinas Puplauskas. Elsewhere, local returnee Craig Woodruff boxed his way to a 60-55 scoreline over Seaham workhorse Jordan Ellison, while Carmarthen prospect
Angelo Dragone triumphed 60-54 over Cardiff’s Rhys Saunders, with the same two officials involved each time. Also on this British Warrior bill, there were 40-36 victories for
Maredudd Thomas and Rhys Edwards. Cardiff’s tall Thomas saw off Bulgarian Petar
Alexandrov – again the Carter/jones combo in charge – and Rhondda’s Edwards dominated Lithuania’s Simas Volosinas, Mr Carter flying solo.
