THE finals of Ireland’s Elite championships will take place on Saturday (February 23) at the National Stadium in Dublin.
Gabriel Dossen is fast becoming a must-watch boxer. He began his first Elite championships in the quarter-finals on February 9, where he faced defending 75kgs champion Michael Nevin. In a statement win Dossen took a split decision victory. In the February 16 semi-finals Dossen defeated Brett
Mcginty, last year’s Elite finalist, outpointing him unanimously.
At 63kgs James Mcgivern also beat a reigning champion in his quarter-final when he beat Wayne
Kelly on a unanimous decision. Mcgivern booked his place on the final with a split semi-final points victory over Kenneth Doyle. “We knew coming down that Wayne would be a big fight and it was a very tactical fight. I couldn’t afford to daydream or let the concentration slip,” Mcgivern said.
Light-heavyweight Tommy Hyde will be another finalist to watch, after he took a split decision over Paul Mccullagh in their semi-final. Tony Browne provided a shock in the 91kgs semi-finals with a points victory over defending heavyweight champion Kiril Afanasev after a close Dublin derby. Ken

World gold medallist Kellie Harrington will take the Elite title by walkover as no opponents entered against her. But she will still perform on Saturday, meeting Sweden’s Jelena Jelic in an international bout. RESULTS
