MAKING AN IMPACT

Repton’s Dubois and Mccann catch the eye in the England Boxing national Youth championship •nals

THE final stages of the England Boxing Youth championships were held from February 15-17 at the Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury.

It was a good weekend for Repton. The London club secured four champions, with Caroline Dubois, the World and Olympic Youth gold medallist among them. Dubois beat Scunthorpe’s Wenessa Orczwk on a unanimous decision in their lightweight final. “It was my first bout since the Youth Olympic Games in October so I felt a little bit ring-rusty, but I was pleased to get it done,” she said. “I knew that she was a decent boxer and would make we work for it – she didn’t come just to make up the numbers.

“It’s nice to box back in my own country and to win this national title.”

Her clubmate Dennis Mccann was highly impressive when he overcame Pinewood’s Cameron Paul in their Youth flyweight final. This was a clash between international boxers that Mccann took by unanimous decision. “It was down as a tough bout on paper, but I beat him a few years ago and I was confident that I was going to win again,” he said. “I’m going back home now, I’ll have a week off and then I will get back into it straight away.”

Pinewood did have a national Youth champion in quality lightweight Adam Azim. He stopped Frankie Gavin’s Jay Turner to take the title.

Adan Mohammed, at Youth 56kgs, and Robert Lacourt, at Cadet flyweight, also won gold for Repton, beating Highfields’ Edward Hardy and Everton Red Triangle’s

Joe Mcgrail respectively, both by unanimous decision.

Gemma Richardson, a World Youth champion herself, was also in action, stopping Alwick’s Jessica Pattinson in their 64kgs final. The Scunthorpe champion said, “I have loved every minute of this event. I might have had the two stoppages [in her semi-final and final], but I never really expected that. I always think the next person who I go in with is going to be the best I have ever boxed.

“The national championships means everything to me because that’s the one you always want to win when you are a youngster growing up.

“Hopefully if I can keep winning, I will go to the Euros again and beyond that get on the GB team.” RESULTS
