Day is not quite able to gain revenge against Ellison
BEATEN by just a single point by Seaham’s
Jordan Ellison in December 2017, Skelmersdale’s Colin Day was looking to avenge his only career loss at the Olympia (VIP Promotions). Despite his best attempts, he had to settle for a draw at the culmination of a real crowd-pleaser. Referee Jamie Kirkpatrick scored 76-76. Victories came the way of Steve
Brogan and Nathan Bennett. Skelmersdale’s Brogan, docked a point for a low blow in the fifth, kept busy with a 59-54 win over Melksham’s Liam
Richards, while Liverpool’s Bennett triumphed 60-54 against Canning Town’s
Lee Hallett. Steve Gray officiated both. Mold’s Cameron Halfpenny – back in the ring for the first time in almost five years – secured a 40-36 success over Chris Jenkinson of Bolton, while Mr Kirkpatrick awarded the same scoreline to local Noel Quarless against Swadlincote’s Kent Kauppinen. Two debutants also won 40-36. Kirkby’s Shawn Hughes saw off Derby’s
experienced Elvis Dube, and Liverpool’s Lee Whelan proved too much for Braintree’s Dylan Draper. Liverpool’s Russia-born Genadij Krajevskij was decked late in the penultimate session and fell to a 60-53 loss to Ellesmere Port’s Mason Cartwright. Mr Gray refereed. Elsewhere, tallies of 39-37 went to Liverpool pair Brian Phillips and Adam Farrell. Game Gloucester man Andy Harris had to take a count from Mr Kirkpatrick in the third against Phillips, while Manchester’s tough Darryl Sharp was cut by the left eye against Farrell. Mr Gray oversaw that one. Isle of Man southpaw Matthew Rennie fought to a 38-38 stalemate with Birmingham’s Ben Fields, who was boxing for the second week in succession. Mr Kirkpatrick was in charge.
THE VERDICT One of two shows in Liverpool on the same night – evidence of the popularity of the fight game on Merseyside.
