DOMINANT DAWS

David Wainwright sees the local man win his third professional bout

-

HEADLINING a Carl Greaves promotion at the Britannia Hotel was Carlton’s Brad Daws, who delighted his army of supporters with a dominant victory (6053) over the tough-but-limited Lewisham-based Swede Edward

Bjorklund. Daws seemed a little nervous in the early rounds but came to life midway through the third. He caught Bjorklund with two cracking body shots and followed up with a thumping left hook which left his opponent on the canvas and his gumshield by my feet at ringside. Daws [celebrating, inset] shrugged off an injury to his left hand to dominate the second half of the fight with his work rate.

There was frustration for Huthwaite’s Ellis Machin, despite fighting back to earn a 58-58 draw with Halifax’s Josh Sandland. It was a dominant start for Sandland, with his superior energy paying dividends, although he lacked Machin’s accuracy. Machin came back in the final two rounds with some brutal combinations, leaving Sandland clinging on at the final bell. Newark debutant Tom Cowling raised the roof with his second-round stoppage of Yeovil’s Bryn Wain. It was one-way traffic from the first bell, as Cowling hurt Wain with some neat combos. Referee-for-thenight Kevin Parker waved the contest off at 2-04 after a right hand downstairs left the overmatched Wain on the mat. It had been set for four.

Sneinton’s Terry Maughan, making his first appearance since October 2017, drew 38-38 with Brierley Hill’s MJ Hall.

Despite sustaining a nasty cut to his right eye, Maughan’s stamina shone through. He perhaps can consider himself unfortunate not to have earned the decision.

THE VERDICT An exciting night’s boxing in a sold-out venue.
