FAST AND FURIOUS

Jacob Kilbride is ringside as Bateson races to victory

-

PROMISING prospect Jack Bateson produced a career-best display to dispatch Barcelona-based Nicaraguan Pablo

Narvaez in less than a round (set for eight). Headlining a Bateson Promotions show inside Elland Road’s Banqueting Suite, Bateson was on the offensive from the first bell. The local’s first significant shot – a crunching left upstairs – hurt Narvaez, before the follow-up put him to the ground. Narvaez was on the canvas once more after a series of rights to the head. At 2-28, referee Ron Kearney intervened as Bateson again swarmed in with a barrage of blows.

Mr Kearney handed a 60-51 verdict to Leeds’ Billy Pickles over Bulgarian

Teodor Nikolov. After a tough opener, Nikolov constantly held, resulting in points deductions in rounds five and six. Pickles scored a flash knockdown from a sweet short right in the fourth. Meanwhile, Hamed Ghaz, of Bradford, took a 60-54 decision from Mr Kearney against Nicaragua’s Eligio Palacios (Andy Brook refereed). Ghaz was the constant aggressor, yet was often found chasing Gelsa’s mobile Palacios, who frustrated with his movement.

Kyle Scully’s rapid hands, eyecatching body shots and tireless work rate were all on show during the Halifax man’s 40-36 win over Reading’s Ibrar Riyaz. The same scoreline also went to Dewsbury’s Cory O’regan against Blackburn’s Naheem Chaudhry. Mr Kearney did the sums for referee Brook on both occasions.

York’s Michael Fafera was given a stern test by Latvian Edgars Sniedze, though Fafera won 39-37 for Mr Kearney. The same official tallied 40-36 in favour of Leeds’ Ismail Khan, who was similarly well-worked by Ukrainian veteran

Dmytro Kostenko.

Chris Ogbonson (Leeds) defeated

Ricky Rose (Chatham) 40-36, while

Denzil Browne (Leeds) triumphed 40-35 against debutant Andy Bishop (Rochdale). Bishop was floored by a right hand in the first round. Mr Kearney scored for referee Brook in both contests.

THE VERDICT Bateson shines with a stylish showing.
