REBUILDING

Terry Dooley sees Morrison win for the third time on the bounce

-

HATTERSLEY’S Marcus Morrison continued to rebuild with a last-round stoppage win over Sheffield-based, Cameroon-born Serge Ambomo on a Black Flash Promotions dinner show at Hilton Manchester Deansgate. Morrison’s unbeaten record was ripped away from him by Jason Welborn in March 2017, and he doubled down on his misfortune when losing to Tyan Booth three months later. A loss to Alistair Warren in June last year meant that “Sweet MNM” slipped even further down the domestic pecking order, but he has now won three in a row for the first time since 2016, as he continues to slowly progress.

For the third week in a row, Ambomo topped a small hall bill in a scheduled six-rounder – he fought Mark Heffron last week and Jack Flatley the week before – yet he was unable to negotiate his way to the final bell this time. A flurry of shots from Morrison prompted referee-forthe-evening Darren Sarginson to jump in after 1-17 of the sixth and final stanza. Morrison meets Warren in a rematch in Middleton next month.

Londoner Ryan Robinson had a clean sweep against Southwark-italian Victor Edagha. His opponent is a difficult man to put away, so Robinson used his precise punching to net a deserved 40-36 victory.

Middleton’s Kildare Ward did not have it all his own way against Blackburn’s Naheem Chaudhry, who showed good form and fitness en route to a close 39-38 loss. It was a contest that could have gone either way and few would have argued had Chaudhry scored the second win of his career after putting in a game stint against an unbeaten opponent.

THE VERDICT Morrison continues his rehabilitation by opening his 2019 ledger with a stoppage victory.
