BILLY’S THE BEST

Dagenham’s Adams beats Hamza Hajee-sherif for title

- Daniel Herbert RINGSIDE

BILLY ADAMS was part of a win double for the local Dagenham club when the London Youth finals were held at the Roundhouse function room. Up against a fellow southpaw in very tall Hamza Hajee-sherif (ELBA), Adams forced the action throughout and landed frequently with his left hand. Billy’s victory, surprisingly only on a 4-1 split, earned him the Best Youth prize.

Dagenham’s other winner came in the preceding bout, at 52kgs, with Darren Bailey edging a 3-2 split over another East London Boxing Academy entrant Uzair

Maqbool. This was nip and tuck throughout, with Maqbool’s leaky defence letting him down.

Also winning two Youth titles was Five Star. At 64kgs Tyler

Sharpe showed good footwork and combinations for a unanimous win over Abdul Rahman Mohammed, while at 81kgs Oladimeji Shittu celebrated his 18th birthday by unanimously outscoring Malcolm Ndambi of Finchley in a battle of tall types. There was an intriguing bout at 91kgs. Dale Youth’s Tino Bellott jabbed sharply for a round before Aloys Youmbi (Double Jab) finally got going and began to force exchanges. Bellott landed a good right in the last but the judges crowned Youmbi by 3-2.

Held in conjunction with the Youths were the finals of the capital’s Intermediate championships, for boxers in between novice and open classification. Standing out was Repton’s multi-titled junior Adan Mohamed, whose mobility and handspeed earned him a unanimous victory over rugged Finchley southpaw Francis Storey at 56kgs.

Best Intermediate prize was

Earlsfield 81kgs Dominik Zieba for his 4-1 win over Seth Gyimah. The Double Jab boxer swung lustily, with a left hook bringing a standing eight count for Zieba. But too often Gyimah’s blows missed widely, and Zieba kept his boxing together to take the next two sessions – and victory. Another Double Jab entry,

Deevorn Miller, lost debatably if unanimously in the 86kgs final to

Stonebridge’s Aaron Hadaway. At 60kgs Repton’s Jawany Scott marched forward only for Fahad

Salum (Lansbury) to triumph on all cards with his sharper- work.

Islington 91&kgs Odera

Okwuosa lasted the pace better for a unanimous victory over Brian

Muwenge (All Stars).

l On February 8 there is a big show at the Tottenham Community Centre (N17 8AD), at 2pm a This Girl Can Box: North vs South event, then at 7pm the Battle of the Belts. Tickets £15.
