PARTY POOPER

Day beaten but second success on the bounce for Lithuanian Edvinas

-

LITHUANIAN Edvinas Puplauskas isn’t above causing an upset, and he proved a party pooper in the bill-topper at Grays Civic Hall by securing a second-round stoppage success over former Southern Area welterweight champion Shaquille Day, whose only previous loss had come over 10 rounds in an English title eliminator against Brummie Kaisee Benjamin 12 months previously. Referee was Chas Coakley.

Uzbek southpaw Shakhobidin Zoirov had stopped two of his three previous opponents inside a round but found Evesham scrapper Brett Fidoe, who was having his first outing of the year, a little more durable. Zoirov, a former Olympic and World amateur champion, who had well over 100 bouts in the vest, hadn’t boxed since an outing in Saudi Arabia way back in July 2019 so this was something of a rust-shedding exercise at the end of which, having been made to work, he secured the 59-56 decision of South Oxhey official Lee Every.

Two-bout Stanford-le-hope fly Jordan Purkiss, most recently a stoppage winner in Kazakhstan, bested Chorlton-cum-hardy’s busy Stephen Jackson to the tune of 58-56 in another six-rounder overseen by Mr Every and, almost two years to the day since his last outing, unbeaten Hornchurch middle

Mitchell Frearson shook off a few cobwebs in a run out against Blackburn centurion

Naeem Ali, taking all six rounds on the card of the Hertfordshire referee.

Basildon’s Inder Bassi went in over six against winless Bury St Edmunds operator

Charlie Sheldon, no real surprise then that he should hand the visitor a sixth straight defeat and in another four, new start James Osbourne saw off Sheffield’s Serge Ambomo who, having not represented much of a threat as of late did enough to earn a round, third Man Chas Coakley, who oversaw both contests, awarding debutant Osbourne a 39-37 win.
