THE H SUITE in Edgbaston is proving increasingly popular with promoters at the moment and busy Tommy Owens switched there from his usual Villa Park haunt for this six-bout offering as half a dozen novices went, with varying degrees of success, looking to further their fistic education.
A pair of new starts in the shape of middleweights Brett Egan and Lewis Howells both emerged victorious over four having exchanged pleasantries with vastly experienced opposition, Egan outscoring Warminster’s Paul Cummings 40-35 and Newport-born Howells, now of Stratfordupon-avon, besting Islington’s ‘Brown Bomber’ Jordan Grannum 39-37.
Both contests were scored by Solihull’s Chris Dean from ringside and refereed by Birmingham trialist Peter Mccormack who having until recently worked as an inspector in the Midlands Area had a dozen or so bouts himself back in the day.
The same referee/scorer combination was in operation too for a four between Wittering welter Craig Brewin and Ukrainian Mykhailo Sovtus who for the second time in a fortnight went down to a 39-37 defeat.
Mr Dean was the man in the middle for the remaining three bouts and he oversaw the only inside the distance finish of the evening when southpaw Nuneaton prospect Ashlee Eales scored a third round ko win, the first of his career, over first-timer Kirk Stevens with just 21 seconds of the penultimate session having gone.
The remaining two contests saw Selly Oak welter Jagdeep Purewal bank a third career distance win when he bettered Yorkshireman Paul Scaife 39-37 but there was disappointment for one-bout Longbridge novice Samuel Pikire who was unable to prevent Devizes puncher Stu ‘Little Canelo’ Greener taking a 39-36 four round victory.
