EUBANK-BENN: SAFETY FIRST

-

THE rehydration clause that is in place for the Chris Eubank Jnrconor Benn fight (but nobody will talk about) causes my apprehension more than the issue of the catchweight.

Since 2010, of the 21 publicised deaths following professionally recognised fights, 14 occurred at 160lbs or lower, with only one heavyweight death. This observation is substantiated by a 2021 study by the Cleveland Clinic Luo Ruvo Center for Brain Health which noted that, “Dehydration secondary to rapid cutting of weight may worsen Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) induced neurotrauma”.

Do we need to take a more medically supervised approach to ensure boxers make the weight safely? And take a close look at rehydration clauses which could inhibit fighters having the required level of cerebrospinal fluid to reduce the chance of TBI, partially in the lower weight classes. In order to protect our sport these discussions need to be transparent, and we need to be frank and honest about the dangers presented, and the solutions available - whatever the cost. We need fighters to be able to protect themselves at all times.

FURY IS GETTING VERY BORING

I AM now sick and tired of Tyson

Fury announcing his retirement, then announcing he's going to fight again, before announcing he's really retired.

I now really don't care one way or the other. In many ways, perhaps it is best for the sport if he, for once, keeps his word and retires. Let the other boxers fight each other for supremacy. That will be far more interesting than the will-he-won't-he saga that Fury is putting everyone through. Fury, I feel, has played the media and boxing fraternity to the extreme. Go and fight Logan Paul, KFC, or Mickey Mouse for all I care.

JAKE PAUL - DON'T SAY HIS NAME!

HATS off to the support staff, the volunteers, and the boxers at the Commonwealth Games. What a fantastic experience for everyone who attended. My lads were very lucky to meet many of the boxers who were all lovely and happy to pose for photos. The boxing was first class, as was the organisation of the event. There were so many close competitive bouts that could have gone either way and the atmosphere was amazing! Meeting the various home nation medallists, and the various boxing teams, will be a memory that will live with us all for a very long time.

I especially want to thank Steve Bunce and Eric Donovan for their time and kindness shown to my boys, Paddy and Sean. I wish you both continued success in your careers. Thank you Birmingham, if this is the future of boxing, the sport we love is in a good place.
