HODDESON’S GOLDEN GIRLS
Four golds and a silver the prizes from European event
HODDESON Boxing Academy fighters shone at the Golden Girl Box Cup in Sweden. They sent five fighters to the largest European club competition for females and came home with four golds and a silver.
Dolly Sambrook was in sparkling form in the under46 kgs junior category.
The 15-year-old started by overwhelming Siri Magnusson (Vaggeryds BK) inside a round and her semi final was over even quicker.
The referee waved it off inside the opening 30 seconds, sending Sambrook through to the final where she faced Ireland’s Lauren Crinnion, a silver medallist at last year’s European Schools Championship.
Sambrook kept Crinnion on the back foot in the opening round before a tighter second. That set up an exciting last round that Sambrook won with her clusters of punches.
Kayla Allen also won three times in three times to take strike gold in the Elite C Under-70 kgs class.
The 18-year-old is a new addition to the Hoddesdon gym and coach Sab Leo has helped bring out the best in her. In the quarter finals, Marlene Farstad
(Fighter Bokseklub) was beaten and she outworked Iris Daoadottir
(Hnefaleikafelag Iceland) to reach the final. Allen saved her best performance for the goold-medal match, against Hannan Abed Al Razik (AIK Boxing, Sweden). For two rounds, Allen picked her off and won by stoppage in the last.
Ella Welland (12) boxed her way to gold in the Diploma under-40 kgs category and her skills made her something of a favourite with the crowd.
She showed her class against Estelle Hakansson
(Halmstad BK) in the last four and dominated Lexi King (Setanta BC, Ireland) in the final as well with her polished boxing. Demi Rose Greenidge (14) also won gold, outpointing Lily Freda Grabert (Bavarian Boxing Association) unanimously in the final.
Greenidge was able to push the German onto her back foot with her jab and score with rights up top and left hooks to the body.
Angel Driscol (15) missed out on gold after being narrowly outpointed by her German opponent in the Junior under-57 kgs category. She overcame the feisty Vilde Nostdahl
(Drobak Bokseklub, Norway) on a split and faced Enie Lux (Bavarian Boxing Association) in the final. Driscol had the German hanging on in the last, but her slow start to the contest cost her.
Leo said: “Words cannot describe how proud we, as a club, are of these females.
“They bond from the off and supported one another throughout. They boxed exceptionally and we were complimented many times by other coaches and officials on their performances.”
