NICARAGUAN Alexander Zeledon, too brave for his own good, came unstuck against heavyhanded Leeds super-welter Jake Goodwin at Doncaster Dome. Having taken a knee for the second time in quick succession, Zeledon was halted at 2-34 of the fourth round by referee Andy Brook in a scheduled six.
The act of dropping his hands while under fire didn’t strike me as being particularly wise and, though he did sling a few back, most of what Zeledon threw fell short – a recipe for an early night, and so it proved, with a burst initially seeing the Latin visitor drop in centre ring before a further left on the resumption returned him to a kneeling position.
It looked for a moment, midway through the second, as if Zeledon’s compatriot
Reynaldo Cajina might spoil the debut of Scunthorpe’s Matthew Harness when an overhand right floored the first-timer, but there was to be no repeat and referee Darren Sarginson had the new start sneaking it 38-37.
The six between unbeaten local Levi Smith and Luton’s winless Darryl Tapfuma proved the contest of the night with Tapfuma, bested in the first half, narrowing the margin significantly as proceedings wore on.
Third man Mr Sarginson scored 58-56 for Smith and he refereed two fours, the first seeing Stainforth’s Jake Bray settling for a 38-38 share versus Hyde’s Dale Arrowsmith, while another local winner was Jamie Mellers, who overcame Leicestershire’s George Rogers 39-37. Hull super-lightweight
Hashim Rehman banked a fifth win when Mr Brook had him a 59-55 winner over Canning Town’s Lee Hallett, and the same official awarded Doncaster light-heavy
Bradley Cousins a 40-37 score over Padiham’s Seamus Devlin. Leeds debutant
Kira Carter found game Ukrainian bantam
Svitlana Vasylevska a little too lively and went down to a 39-38 defeat.
