HOLBORN

FEBRUARY 24

LIMEHOUSE BOXING ACADEMY (featuring guest boxers from Rainham and Ropes and Glory) boxed eight entertaining senior bouts in front of a packed audience at the Grand Connaught Rooms on February 24. It was a clean sweep in the end for the East London boxing club and guests - Limehouse winning 8-0 - but the overall result didn’t reflect the closeness of some of the contests.

The bout of the night saw Limehouse BA’S Amo Singh (62kg) win a 3-2 split decision over the experienced Will Hewett (62kg) of Leigh Boxing Club. In a highly skilled three-threes, Singh started strongly and sharply as he forced a standing eight count in the first round with a series of crisp shots out of his southpaw stance. Hewett closed the gap with a busier second round but Singh secured the win by upping the pressure in the third.

With stars of the ring Anthony Crolla, Maurice Hope and Moses Itauma watching on, the Limehouse team had built an unassailable lead by the interval as Terri Naylor

(50kg) took a well-deserved unanimous verdict over the game but outgunned Mille Symonds

(guesting for Merseyside from St Ives BC). England international Frankie Wood (58kg) of Ropes and Glory BC then took the tie beyond any doubt when he stopped the plucky Sidiqi Safiullah (Golden Gloves) with a series of powerful counters that forced a stoppage in the second round of the senior bout.

Boxer of the night – as voted by Anthony Crolla – went to Ramone Morris (57kg) of Limehouse BA in a lively encounter with Mahbub Rahman (59kg) of Golden Gloves. Morris gave away weight but commanded the bout from centre ring with a sharp and busy lead hand and some eye catching bursts. The Mersey boxer pushed Morris all the way but the Limehouse man came out on top with a 3-2 split decision after three-twos of exiting action. The show closed with a commanding performance from Limehouse BA’S NABC 80kg champion, Joachim Johnson against Badra Toure from the Golden Gloves in Liverpool.

Joachim came out quickly and with intent as he forced a standing eight within the first 40 seconds, with a couple of sharp straight right hands. Toure tried to stand his ground but the referee called a halt after another series of hurtful shots from the Limehouse man and the bout was called off after 2-00 of the first round.

This was a charity event organised by The Berkley Group with Limehouse BA. It is their big annual charity fundraiser.
