JOSHUA GUSTAVE
A man who was drawn to the sport by Mike Tyson meets Andrew Fairley
When and why you started boxing:
I started around 15/16. I was drawn to the gym from the times I would pick up my older brother and see the steamed windows and hear the noises of the gym, which seemed appealing to me. I also thought I was a decent fighter at that age but came to learn that there was more to boxing than just fighting.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Mike Tyson. Everything about a prime Tyson drew me to the sport, from the way he was so devastating in the ring to the way he carried himself outside the ring. He was unapologetically himself at all times.
Best fight you’ve seen:
It would have been Tony Bellew vs Illunga Makubu. After the fight I naturally looked more into Bellew’s career and his journey has been an inspirational one for me.
Personal career highlight:
Turning pro and persevering through all the trials and tribulations on the way to my first fight; just not giving up on myself or my dreams is my biggest achievement, as I’ve had plenty of opportunities to go down a different path. But I’ve stayed true to myself and kept pushing.
Toughest opponent:
All my opponents have been good competitors and I give credit to anyone who decides to put on gloves and step inside a boxing ring.
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My strength is definitely my mindset. I am a strong believer in thoughts become things and that your mindset determines your quality of life. My weakness would be my sweet tooth.
Training tip:
Embrace the process, dig deep and push yourself every session. One per cent better every day and remember uncomfortable situations are the key to growth.
Favourite meal/restaurant:
Cereal – I can eat that any time of day. Restaurant would be anywhere that does a good burger and chips
Best friends in boxing:
I don’t have best friends in boxing.
Which other athlete would you like to be and why?
An MMA fighter.
Last film/tv show you saw:
Game Of Thrones, watching it for the second time. Undefeated series
Who would play you in a film of your life:
Tom Hardy
Have you ever been starstruck:
I don’t get starstruck but the first time I see all four directing staff on SAS: Who Dares Wins, I was like “Wow, this is real and this is really happening”. Those four men are real life superheroes.
Last time you cried:
In the gym talking to my coach about life.
Best advice received:
Never make permanent decisions on temporary feelings.
Worst rumour about yourself:
None.
Something not many people know about you:
My second daughter was born on my 20th birthday.
