GONE BACK TO HIS ROOTS

Munroe returns to the club where he served his apprenticeship in 40 bouts as an amateur boxer

RENDALL MUNROE has gone back to his roots as a trainer at Leicester Railwaymen’s ABC.

Munroe served a 40-bout amateur apprenticeship at the club – then known as Old Robin Hood – under his late uncle Dave ‘Sticky’ Pratt and Jon Whike.

He wore the club’s red-and-green colours on his shorts throughout a pro career that brought him Commonwealth and European honours and a world-title shot in Japan.

Whike has been head coach since Pratt’s death and he was joined by Munroe in the corner on his club’s show on Sunday, April 23.

Best boxer for Leicester Railwaymen’s was Charlie Foottit, a 17-year-old middleweight who returned after a couple of years out to stop Sehewa Mazengo (Darley) on a cut in the third round. Foottit was surely heading for a points win.

He only had a 3-9 record going into the bout, but looked polished as he slipped jabs from the taller Mazengo in the opener and countered with looping rights.

Foottit stood off in the second more in the second and walked Mazengo onto uppercuts and body shots. He shipped a couple of rights when he gave up too much ground and found himself on the ropes, but still it was his round on BN’S scorecard.

The fighters met in the centre of the ring at the start of the third and traded punches furiously. Foottit had Mazengo backing up on shaky legs with a thumping left hook that opened the cut that led to the finish.

Female teenager Thabiso Moyo made it two wins in the space of nine days with a unanimous points win over Millie Bowen (Darlaston).

Moyo, a points winner over Lizzie Mccormick (Cwmavon Hornets) in Wales the previous week, dominated Millie Bowen (Darlaston).

The solid Moyo scored with body shots and onetwos in the first before putting together three-andfour punch combinations to clearly win the second. Moyo couldn’t miss with her left in the last and referee Jeff Gibbs gave Bowen a count in the closing 30 seconds after she landed a clean shot.
