Football Robins pegged back after early goal from O’Dowda

BRISTOL City drew with Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon as the Robins played their first pre-season game of the 2018-19 campaign at Ashton Gate.

A lovely sunny afternoon saw Lee Johnson’s side open the scoring through Callum O’Dowda before Stefan Payne equalised. Adam Webster hit the post in the second half before Opi Edwards spurned a good opening in the final ten minutes.

It’s off to Marbella next for the Robins before a final warm-up for the next Championsh­ip season against AFC Bournemout­h.

Johnson named a strong side for the Robins’ fourth pre-season game of the season with Adam Webster and Nathan Baker in front of Frank Fielding and Jack Hunt and Erps Pisano the full-backs.

A midfield of Korey Smith and Liam Walsh played behind Jamie Paterson, Callum O’Dowda and Marley Watkins, with Andreas Weimann leading the line.

It looked like Hunt sustained a minor knock in the first half and was replaced by George Dowling at right-back. That came after O’Dowda had opened the scoring on 14 minutes.

The Irishman collected a short pass from Smith and drove low into the far corner beyond Shrewsbury’s trialist in goal from just outside the penalty area.

But the lead lasted a mere four minutes as Stefan Payne let rip with a low drilled effort into Fielding’s left corner of the goal from just out-
