BRISTOL City have been linked with a move for Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Alex Cairns.

The Sun are reporting that Cairns, 25, is the latest man wanted by Lee Johnson as he looks to end his ‘keeper search.

Johnson allowed Luke Steele to leave the Robins at the end of the season but has failed to replace him so far after reportedly missing out on targets.

Bristol City were strongly linked with a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson but he ended up signing on loan with Sheffield United instead.

Cairns is the man now on the radar as Bristol City eye competition for Frank Fielding at Ashton Gate.

The Cod Army keeper began his career at Leeds United but failed to make a breakthrough, spending most of his time out on loan.

Cairns then made a permanent move to Chesterfield but because of a lack of football, he headed over to Rotherham United. He signed for Fleetwood in 2016 and enjoyed an excellent first season as they finished fourth.

He was rewarded with a longterm contract keeping him at the club until 2021 and he has now made 81 appearances in all competitions, keeping 34 clean sheets.

The goalkeeper was handed the number one shirt by new manager Joey Barton at Fleetwood this week after previously wearing No 21

He told the club’s official site: “As a goalkeeper I’m always worked hard and been desperate to one day have a number one shirt at a professional club.

“It’s an honour for me to wear the number one shirt for Fleetwood Town.”
