Roy’s a doubt for decider

-

ENGLAND opener Jason Roy is a major doubt for today’s one-day international series decider against India at Headingley. The 27-year-old is struggling with an injury to the little finger on his right hand. Should he miss the game, Hampshire’s James Vince is expected to come in for the third and final match of a series tied at 1-1. Roy has scored 78 runs across the opening two ODIs, with Joe Root, a centurion at Lord’s, the only Englishman to have scored more. England are hoping the winnertakes-all scenario they are faced with in Leeds will stand them in good stead for next summer’s 50-over World Cup on home soil. “I think this has an impact for the World Cup,” said seamer Mark Wood. “We can use it as a game where it might be (like) a semi-final or a knockout game. “It’s a series decider here, which will be like a World Cup match - it’s a must-win. Luckily, over the past year we’ve managed these situations really well. Hopefully we can carry on that trend.” Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal, coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and manager Asanka Gurusinha have each been suspended for six international matches for “conduct which is contrary to the spirit of the game”. The men have each been handed eight suspension points, meaning they will miss the first four One-Day Internationals against South Africa, along with both Test matches. The bans come after the trio pleaded guilty to an ICC charge following last month’s Test against the West Indies in St Lucia. »
