Robins step up goalkeeper search after Fielding’s injury setback Football
BRISTOL City will be stepping up their search for a new senior goalkeeper after Frank Fielding sustained an injury at the weekend. The understands the former Blackburn Rovers stopper suffered the knock in the first half against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday. Young prospect Max O’Leary played the second half of the game, which finished 1-1 after Callum O’Dowda scored for the Robins and Stefan Payne equalised for the visitors. However, City may now be counting the cost. Rumours have been circulating on social media that Fielding was spotted hobbling into a hospital on Monday. And we can confirm, as per our sources, that the goalkeeper has indeed suffered a knock. Fielding did not travel to Marbella with the rest of the City squad and instead has had a scan on his injured leg as the club wait to see the seriousness of the injury. The Robins were already in the market for a new goalkeeper and will now step up that search after Luke Steele was released at the end of last season. Reports at the weekend suggested head coach Lee Johnson is looking at Fleetwood Town’s Alex Cairns, but we understand there are several other goalkeepers being tracked too. Tim Krul is another who has been linked but his wages are likely to be hard to accommodate in the Bristol City set-up. If Fielding’s injury is serious - Bristol Post with the start of the season just three weeks away - then there may be a rush for City to get a deal done. However, O’Leary is also highlyrated at Ashton Gate and did well at National League side Solihull Moors last season, having impressed at Bath City the year before. The 21-year-old is likely to mind the nets in the Robins’ two games in Marbella this week.
