Cycle challenge in memory of Zoggy

-

STUDENTS and staff at a Bristol school took on a cycling challenge to raise money for research into meningitis in memory of an 18-year-old who died from the disease.

The challenge was organised by Morgan White in memory of best friend George Zographou – known as Zoggy – who died after contracting the disease while at the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay last August.

The fundraiser at Oasis Academy, Brislington, saw staff and students take part in the cycle challenge in which they pedalled on static bikes in the school atrium for 20-minute slots.

More than 50 people took part in the fundraiser, which will also be held at other city schools. Pupils and staff also made and sold cakes to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Morgan has set himself a fundraising target of £11,200. The two events bolstered funds by a further £300. Morgan, 19, is also planning to cycle to Paris next month over the anniversary of George’s death. George and three friends – known as the Tour De Zogs team – will tackle the cycle challenge with George’s sister and her friends.

Morgan said: “The events are not just about raising money for the charity but also raising awareness of the symptoms of meningitis.

“We know the cycle to Paris will be tough but it will be so rewarding when we finally cross the finishing line in memory of George.”
