School celebrates greenhouse gift

-

GREENFINGERED youngsters will be busy growing fruit and vegetables this summer - after being donated a greenhouse.

Students at St Anne’s Primary School, Hewish meet twice a week for the school’s gardening club to plant seeds, observe how they grow and then harvest the fruit and vegetables to eat.

More than 50 children are now members of the club, making it the most popular extra curricular activity.

The greenhouse was donated by bosses at Puxton Park adventure park.

Puxton Park owner Alistair Mead said: “At Puxton Park our mission is to encourage children and their families to get outside and interact with animals and the environment in a fun and engaging way.

“The great thing about gardening is that kids can touch and feel the dirt, seeds and flowers, see the vibrant colors and varied sizes of the plants, hear the sound of the vegetable when it is taken from the plant and smell the amazing scents of the flowers.

“Allowing all of the senses to be involved helps kids understand and grasp the concept of gardening along with all of the scientific concepts that go along with it.”

The school has named the greenhouse the Puxton Patch greenhouse. The school has also expanded their gardening beds to their KS1 playground to ensure that every child in school has an opportunity to explore what gardening involves.
