-

A 25-YEAR-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with arson.

Emergency services rushed to Stokes Croft at around 2am on Tuesday after police received reports of suspicious activity in a building.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Southmead, Hicks Gate and Temple put out three fires at the property in King Square.

The building is located off Jamaica Street. It’s near several student flats and the Compass Centre night shelter.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used two high-pressure hose reels and one 45mm jet to extinguish the fire.

Ali Thahab, of no fixed address, was charged with arson and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

He appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court and his case was sent for trial.

Thahab was denied bail and will appear at Bristol Crown Court on December 7.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary confirmed nobody was injured in the fire.
