okay, because that is what Kyle would want.”
Asked how she wanted people to remember Kyle, Helen said she hoped he would now be seen in a different light to the one cast during Islam’s court case.
She said she hoped that by coming forward, and telling her story in such detail, the public would recognise the difficulties her son experienced - difficulties that can be linked to the guilt he felt over his mum’s attack in 2009.
“I want people to identify Kyle for what Kyle was. I don’t want people to identify Kyle for how he has been told about,” she said.
“You know, how it has been - fuel theft and end of story, because that is unfair. Kyle wouldn’t have had these problems if it wasn’t for what happened to me in 2009.
“My son has lost his life for £58 and I’m not going to give up on him. He saved my life and I owe him that.
“He has gone from hero to this criminal of fuel theft and that is not good.
“I want people to identify my son for what he is and what he was.” ”THE death of Kyle Clarke was a tragedy and our Major Crime Investigation Team carried out a full and thorough investigation which resulted in Shakrul Islam being convicted of Kyle’s manslaughter following a trial,” a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said.
“From the outset, we’ve always treated Kyle as a victim of an unlawful killing and our priority has been to secure justice for him and his family.
“Our thoughts will always be with Kyle’s family and loved ones, who’ve been through an unimaginable ordeal and they were fully supported throughout the criminal investigation by a trained family liaison officer.
“The officers who were first on the scene of this incident were wearing body worn video which shows all the emergency service personnel involved did everything they could to try and save Kyle in what were very distressing circumstances.
“The post-mortem examination results categorically show that Kyle suffered fatal injuries when he was first struck by the car.
“Sadly, there was nothing anyone could do to save his life.
“The officers did everything they could to protect Kyle’s dignity and his body was covered as soon as possible. We acknowledge that a forensics tent was unfortunately unavailable but we obtained screens from the fire and rescue service to ensure Kyle’s body was protected from public view.
“Following incidents where a death is suspicious, we have to carry out a meticulous evidencegathering examination of the scene and sadly this means the victim’s body will remain at the scene for a longer period of time than we would prefer.
“We’re aware how distressing this was to Kyle’s family, but it was important to carry out an exhaustive and meticulous inquiry at the scene.”
