Vision revealed for £140m scheme on site of former fire and rescue service

THIS is what a new £140 million development is set to look like at Bristol’s new harbour hub.

The former headquarters of Avon Fire and Rescue Service will be transformed into new homes and offices at the Finzels Reach quarter.

Bristol developer Cubex is hosting a public consultation on the proposals before they are submitted to Bristol City Council next year.

Plans include a 150,000sqft contemporary office building which will feature a unique corkscrew staircase rising up through a glass atrium to a rooftop terrace.

There will also be 300 apartments based in buildings of varying heights, from seven storeys right through to 16 levels.

Affordable homes will make up 20 per cent of the flats.

The apartments will also include a rooftop terrace and shared entertainment space along with extensive cycle storage and maintenance facilities.

The buildings will boast coworking space at ground floor level for the increasing number of people working independently or running their own business.

Gavin Bridge, executive director at Cubex, said: “This year has been pivotal for Finzels Reach as it’s really come into its own with more residents and businesses moving in, the hotel opening, as well as the lively food market every Friday becoming an established part of the Bristol street food scene.”

He added the development will provide ‘much-needed’ homes including ‘built-to-rent’ properties.

Cubex started regeneration work at Finzels Reach a little more than five years ago. The company stepped in to develop the site after a previous attempt went into receivership.

The first phase of Finzels Reach is almost complete and already homes have been built, office space created and a 168-bedroom Premier Inn hotel, with a micro-brewery, further cafes and restaurants in the pipeline.

Left Handed Giant’s cutting-edge brewery and brewpub, a new restaurant by Peter Sanchez-Iglesias of Michelin Star restaurant Casa- mia, and a new cafe by Spicer & Cole are all set to open next year.

Work on the redevelopment of the former Avon Fire and Rescue site is likely to start in the summer of 2019, subject to planning approval.

The public consultation event is being held at The Marketing Suite, Finzels Reach, from 3pm to 7.30pm tomorrow (December 11).
