The lack of fight after we went 2-0 down was dreadful

-

ANOTHER terrible performance. We cannot go on like this – something has to change or are we just going to give up our Division One status without a fight?

By the end of the game the silence was deafening. People don’t really want to keep getting on the players’ backs, but it was awful to see how little fight the boys in blue and white put up once we went two goals down.

The problem is this team are not good enough. Darrell Clarke admits the players he brought in during the summer have been very disappointing and I think there are too many problem positions to solve to save our season.

The scoreboard operator could see it was going to be a waste of time switching on the display once he saw that Stefan Payne and Tom Nichols were starting up front with no wingers. Where on earth were the goals going to come from?

How could Alex Jakubiak not be in the starting line-up after his fantastic goal at Swansea? It was the sort of goal Payne and Nichols would never be capable of, yet once again they were in the side and failed miserably.

Jakubiak’s confidence must have been high after that goal. It would surely have been better to give him a start. What is the point of paying his wages on loan from Watford if he cannot get in a side when other strikers cannot score?

Marcus Stewart was a great player for Rovers, but I was disappointed at his negative response even after we had won at Swansea. Instead of praising what a great goal Alex had scored he said he should be getting a few tap-ins. Torreira scored with a great overhead kick for Arsenal on Saturday. I bet his coach didn’t tell him to get some tap-ins.

Forget all the goings-on off the pitch, the buck for the team selection stops with Darrell Clarke. Kyle Bennett is not the greatest, but at the moment he is the man most likely to make things happen and I could not believe he did not start.

If we were to play with no wingers then surely Danny Leadbitter has to be a better bet at right-back than Joe Partington, who doesn’t have the pace to overlap, and his defending in this game left a lot to be desired, too. The defending is very poor even with Jack Bonham. I believe Tom Lockyer has lost form because he is surrounded by incompetence, but I hope they all prove me wrong at Sunderland.
