Late penalty leaves Seagulls five points adrift at the bottom

-

THE Seagulls dominated against Welling United, but lost to a late Bradley Goldberg penalty.

George Nurse dragged an early shot wide of the target from 25 yards, before Goldberg and David Ijaha both had attempts on goal, the latter seeing his shot sting the palms of Luke Purnell.

Gavin McCallum and Brendan Kieran were next to test the Weston shot-stopper, but both attempts were bread and butter for the experienced goalkeeper.

Matt Bower came close to breaking the deadlock for Weston near half-time only to see his header from a Nurse free-kick hit the post.

In the second half, a Jamie Lucas shot inside the area was held by Welling keeper Daniel Wilks, who followed up by saving an effort from Jason Pope.

Purnell pushed away a Goldberg effort at his near post after the forward had been played in on goal, while at the other end Pope almost got his name on the scoresheet as his fierce volley was gathered by Wilks at the second attempt.

Nurse was inches from breaking the deadlock ten minutes before the end when his shot from outside the area curled narrowly over the bar.

But Welling snatched the lead in the 85th minute when Kieran was tripped by Aaron Parsons inside the area and Goldberg slotted home the penalty.

Weston are now five points adrift at the bottom of the table.
