School’s out for ever... but council’s still fining drivers for parking there

RESIDENTS are still receiving fines for parking on zigzag lines outside a nursery that closed more than two years ago.
Redroofs nursery in Poplar Road, Warmley, closed permanently in 2016 when the owners decided to resign their registration as providers of early years education, after allegations of force feeding.
But despite the nursery being closed for more than two years, and the building reverting back to a residential house, zigzag lines still remain on both sides of the street outside the former nursery.
And last month Poplar Road resident Margaret Durbin was handed a £70 fine for parking on the zigzag lines.
Her parking ticket from South Gloucestershire Council stated that she had received the fine for being “stopped in a restricted area outside of a school”.
The 60-year-old said that she did not appeal against the fine because she was worried about having to pay the full £70 rather than the discounted option if she paid it within 14 days.
However, she says the council should not be fining motorists for parking on these lines as there hasn’t been a school or nursery in operation in the road for more than two years.
“It’s clearly just a money making scheme as loads of cars park on them because they know there isn’t a school there anymore,” she added.
“The council need to remove the lines and stop fining people for just trying to park on their street,” she said.
South Gloucestershire Council has been contacted for a comment on the issue.
