TIME FOR A LITTLE TLC

Want to build your kerb appeal? Lesley Taylor says to try these quick fixes for an instant update

-

You’re not alone if you’ve neglected your home’s outside areas throughout the long, miserable winter months. But as spring gets into full swing and the days become longer, is it time you showed your home’s exterior a little TLC?

GRAND ENTRANCE

Creating a welcoming entrance will not only give your kerb appeal a boost, but will provide a warm reception for guests too.

Start with your front door. If it’s seen better days, and budget allows, consider investing in a new one. There is a wealth of choice when it comes to doors, both aesthetically – everything from colourful composites to traditional woods – and practically – from beefed up security to keeping heat in.

When picking your new door, choose a design that will complement the rest of your home’s overall style but don’t be afraid to go for something bold for maximum impact.

If your budget won’t quite stretch to a new installation – there is plenty you can do with your existing fixtures.

Start with a really good clean. Not just your door but its surrounding too. If your door is made from wood, consider sanding it down and giving it a lick of paint. You could even change the handle and knocker for a quick

update. Then install some new lights in the space around your door – which will not only add to the styling but will also help with security. And consider placing tall plants or small bay trees in pots at either side of your door.

DRIVE TIME

Drives and paths leading to the home can be one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to spring cleaning, but small efforts can pay big dividends. Start with a good clean – with a jet wash if you have one. Remove and replace any cracked paving slabs or blocks and get rid of any weeds.

WINDOW DRESSING

If your windows don’t undergo regular cleaning, now is the time to get them sparkling. And don’t neglect the surrounding woodwork or fixtures, these too should be shown considerable attention to get them looking as good as new. After all, a dirty frame will only look worse next to pristine windows.

Spring is a really good time to consider how your window dressings look from the road.

For example, if your curtains have become dirty or damp during the winter months, it could be time to consider updating – or at least cleaning – your drapes.

If you are tempted to change up your window dressings, there is more choice than ever on the market – no matter what your style.

From American-inspired shutters to o neat roller blinds, sweeping curtains and sheer drapes, the options are endless. Just remember to consider how they look from the outside as well l as their interior appeal.

GREEN FINGERS

Now is the perfect time to go to your local garden centre and snap up some brightly hued plants to add a pop of colour to your outside space – be it a palatial garden or an intimate yard.

Whatever your level of expertise in the garden, there will be a plant to suit your skills – from the low maintenance of heather to beautiful lavender. There are even some stunning artificial plants crafted specially to withstand the elements that will still give your garden some real appeal.

Before planting your new additions, give your garden a really good weed and get rid of any plants that have seen better days.

If your lawn hasn’t been cut since the balmy days of last summer, this could be the perfect weekend to dig out the mower and get stuck in.
