Government must do more to keep us moving

- With Bristol North West MP Darren Jones

IWAS pleased to see this week that city and regional government has supported recommendations set out in my North Bristol Transport Plan, which was created with many of my constituents in 2018/19, in an updated local transport strategy.

The commitment to return rail services to Henbury station, build segregated bike lanes along major routes and invest in orbital bus services take us a step closer to realising our vision for a modern and connected transport system. We must now build on this progress.

Cheap, reliable and frequent public transport is vitally important to everyone in Bristol. Proper passenger train services in Henbury is a victory not only for commuters but also for families, young people and anyone that wants a connected and sustainable transport system in Bristol.

High-quality transport networks remain a top priority for my constituents and government must do more to deliver a modern and connected transport strategy in Bristol. I hear about nightmare morning commutes, dysfunctional or unreliable bus services and dangerous cycle routes whenever I meet with my constituents and many now worry about the carbon and pollution cost of driving too.

In my North Bristol Transport Plan I call for Transport Hubs at the Portway Park and Ride, the proposed Henbury Park and Ride and North of Lockleaze. These hubs would connect rail, bus, cycling (storage and hire) and car parking with electric vehicle charging. They would form a connected orbital network of bus and cycle routes.

The Portway and Henbury park and ride proposals are a step in the right direction but their design must incorporate proper pedestrian and cycle access. Rail and bus facilities should be built on the same site. The last mile of any journey is also important and that is why these Park and Rides must also build in connecting services for those living inside the orbital route.

Bristol is a successful and growing city. Our opportunities for growth, reducing inequality and tackling climate change require a low cost, low carbon reliable transport network. We’ve started to make progress but we’ve got to keep our feet on the peddles.
