Sports centre to remain closed
A NORTH Somerset sports centre used by hundreds of schoolchildren each week is to remain closed for the rest of the year.
Churchill Sports Centre, on a site shared by Churchill Academy and Sixth Form, has been shut since March due to coronavirus.
North Somerset Council has been working with current operators GLL to look at ways of reopening the centre.
But due to the building’s narrow corridors, it has been difficult to put the necessary social distancing measures in place needed to ensure the safety of students, staff and customers.
Officials say that reopening the centre with only limited facilities would not be financially viable with the current contract due to end in March.
Now authority bosses have agreed to end the contract with GLL six months early.
The sports centre will remain closed for the rest of the year while the authority looks at other ways to get the site open.
